Black Milk Mixtape

Another free hiphop mixtape, this time from the producer/MC Black Milk (who you made of heard for his work with, amongst others, Slum Village), courtesy of Fat Beats Records, to support his forthcoming full length “Popular Demand” due 13th March.

The quality is kept high throughout with the 100% Black Milk production ranging from bass-heavy thudders to more soulful tracks, there’s a definite J Dilla vibe to his work. As well as his own joints, also featured are his production with others including the excellent recent Pharoahe Monch track “Let’s Go”, some Slum Village and Canibus cuts. For a producer too, Milk is strong on the mic - one of the better producer/MCs I’ve heard recently.

Give it a listen, I wasn’t too aware of him before last week but after checking the mixtape I’m definitely picking up his album. I’ve upped some of my favourite tracks, grab the full download link after the tracklisting.

Some Chill Vybz

Nujabes  is a japanese hip hop producer and dj who records under the name Nujabes. The alias is an anagram of his first and last name spelled backwards and combined. Alongside making music, Nujabes is also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hyde-Out Productions. Nujabes’s genre-blending music style is known for a strong cool jazz and soul influence. He most typically uses samples from artists such as Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, and Yusef Lateef and adds live instrumentation to create warm, mellow tracks. Despite his role as DJ, Nujabes rarely plays live and does not make many media appearances, which adds to his enigmatic charisma. This trait extends into his album covers, all of which express a particular distinct, abstract imagery. Nujabes has released two albums in Japan, Metaphorical Music in 2003 and Modal Soul in 2005. Specifically, Metaphorical Music sold over 20,000 copies by 2004, an unheard-of amount for an independent release.
