R.I.P. J D
Posted by PaulJ Dilla
This man was the master of underground hip hop . He could do it all and he did it all the best. from producing to rapping to singing… anything. He did it and he did it the best. This man revolutionized hip hop and music culture in itself. Best producer ever in my opinion. He will be in my mind and my ears till the day I die. RIP J Dee. You will be forever missed.
J DILLA TRIBUTE (CLICK HERE!!!!!): Metal Lungies.
When producer James Yancey (aka Jay Dee, aka J Dilla) passed away last year due to kidney failure, his death was mourned by music fans nationwide and beyond. The life and work of the beatmaker—who ranks alongside Premier and Pete Rock as one of the brightest producers of our time—has since been the focus of countless events. A year after Dilla’s death, the District is still rightfully paying homage to the man who brought us everything from Pharcyde’s “Runnin’?” to Janet Jackson’s “Got ’Til It’s Gone.” “D.C. Loves Dilla” will pay tribute to the producer in the best possible way: by having tremendous DJs, including Maryland’s DJ Roddy Rod and Detroit’s Wajeed, spin some of the finest compositions created by Dilla during his far too short career. The performances begin at 9 p.m. at Liv, 2001 11th St. NW (above Bohemian Caverns). $5. (202) 299-0800. -Sarah Godfrey, February 2, 2007, Washington City Newspaper
James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974–February 10, 2006), better known as J Dilla or Jay Dee, was an acclaimed Hip-Hop producer who emerged from the mid-1990s underground Hip-Hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. He began his career as a member of the group Slum Village, and was also a driving force in the production trio The Ummah. Yancey started his career under the name Jay Dee (based on his initials) but used the name J Dilla from 2001 onward. Many critics believe J Dilla’s work to have had a major influence on his peers and that he embodied the neo soul sound, playing a defining yet understated role during the sub-genre’s rise (roughly from the mid-90s to the early 2000s). J Dilla was often dubbed “your favorite producer’s favorite producer,” and was highly regarded by mainstream artists and producers such as Common, Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, Just Blaze, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell Williams, and ?uestlove. -wikipedia
It is with great sorrow that the Family and Friends of J Dilla announces his spiritual transition on the morning of February 10th, 2006 in the loving arms of his mother, Maureen Yancey.J Dilla had suffered for over three years with an incurable blood disease, and had also been diagnosed with lupus.
He leaves behind a body of work which will be loved and rediscovered for years to come. His most recent album “Donuts” was released on February 7th, the day of his 32nd birthday. “The Shining” (BBE) was released in August 2006. -Stonesthrow.com
