Lunice is just that dude.
Anyone who has seen this charismatic shy guy come to life on stage will testify that he is the truth. It was just over a year ago that Lunice started bumping his own beats at the Bass Culture + Turbo Crunk nights, and in that short amount of time the music he creates has come full circle, from a burgeoning hiphop producers bedroom, to a deep current club sound, and settling somewhere right in the middle, with a twist of blips and soundclips.
The cross section of people that get open to his music is astounding, his live show instantly allows people to see how much love he has for the beats he makes and his motivation for doing them. He has juice. Lunice loves to make people get down to it.
In a short amount of time Lunice became the anchor for the Turbo Crunk events, playing earlier slots with a bit slower beats, and bringing it up to pace for a full night of remix music. It is in fact a very tough job for most DJs, but an exceptional task to do well by any producer. Lunice taxes crowds and leaves them wanting more.
Recently signed to the Codeine Drum label (for a collab project between himself and Al Ripken) all we can really say is to keep your ear open for him. Dude is doing those big things already.
You can catch Lunice as a resident at Turbo Crunk.

In just two years our young dude Philippe Aubin-Dionne (a.k.a. Hovatron) has graduated from learning industry ‘ins’ at the Ninjatune stockroom to being heralded as Montreals answer to the hipster jumpoff (or as we call it, the runoff.). Drawing deep musical influence from (and also chopping up / reworking) sideways boombap to southern drank music to dubstep and techno, his tripped out live sets and strong work ethic have made a bass heavy sound that is winning over fans and building a strong anticipation for his first record to be released.
Hovatron was the PA side of Mofomatronix, a versatile DJ team that ran the Bass Culture monthly at the famed Zoobizarre venue, which in turn helped break some of the best sounds in the city, and which also brought out many serious DJs and PA shows before joining forces with the Turbo Crunk team last year. Look for big things from Phil.
Mofomatronix continues as a DJ team while Hovatron works on his ever expanding PA arsenal. His new mixtape is fire. You should check it out.

Megasoid was born out of the ashes of a burnt-up modular synth borrowed in a coffee line, followed by a summer of mobile partying in a shitty van with a DIY Mojito stand that produced: 1) a drank-soaked machinedrum (RIP), 2) some mangled computers (RIP) and 3) a pair of dudes with intrinsic talent / chemistry / lust for making dirty street-bass remixes.
Comprised of Robert “Speakerbruiser” Squire (ex-Sixtoo/ Sebutones/ 1200hobos) and Hadji “Robert Downey DJ” Bakara (the electronics contingent of Wolf Parade), this notorious Montreal duo has been smashing the local population with their brand of rap-influenced big-synth remix music, leaving a trail of bruised PAs and broken beer glasses in its path. Megasoid remixes and mixtapes have garnished serious attention and praise from highbrow music critics and reputable DJs alike, while their illegal parties are legendary. Google it.
While promoting for / remixing for / working exclusively with an A-list of taste-maker producers and rappers from Europe and North America, Megasoid has put the Northeast on smashmode, making their nights a home for producer friends worldwide. Their leaked tracks and remixes have built a serious anticipation for their first album now in the works. In the meanwhile, expect some of their legit remix work to surface before the album’s release on Ninja Tune.
“I played this remix so many times that I eventually listed it as my favorite song of 2007.” – Sasha Frere Jones (The New Yorker) talking about Megasoid’s “No More Blood” remix for Ghislain Poirier.
Moving from street/loft parties where they cut their gold-fronts to large capacity clubs (which they’ve occasionally been known to get kicked out of), Megasoid’s Turbo Crunk parties in Toronto and Montreal have quickly become one of the livest and most notorious franchises in North America. In turn, Montreal has become one of the few cities with a legit scene for street-bass music.
The list of people who have appeared alongside Megasoid is starting to read like a “Who’s Who” of top-shelf producers and DJs: GlitchMob (edIT and Boretta), Lucky Me (Hudmo, Rustie, Mike Slott and Dom Sum), Ed Banger (Medhi, Busy P), Dj Assault, DJ Funk, Holy Fuck, South Rakkas Crew, Machinedrum, Deadbeat, Lorn, Mofomatronix, Lunice, Blingmod, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Big Toe’s HiFi, 215, Mouse on Mars, Thunderheist, The Cool Kids, Jokers of the Scene, Bonjay, PeerPressue, Kid Koala, KnifeHandChop and Modeselektor. Just to name a few.
Megasoid are currently working on a full length LP which will be ready for consumption next summer, in the meanwhile you can check out the two mixtapes they have release this year “Remix Runners” and “Tank Thong”, chocked full of their favorite remix material, compiled from PA + remix sets.

So I have a test in my Musical Styles class and these are two of the songs that I need to recognize. The first one is a pretty cool song by a composer who was a professor at my school and still preforms here, which is pretty cool. I also have to know a song by an electronic group that still writes and preforms, called Kraftwerk. This is the first band that I had heard in this class that I knew. Everything before this was the classical music type stuff. Anways here they are:

School of Music Professor Mark Phillips likes to compare the work of a composer to that of an architect — except, he says, “your medium is time, space, and vibration.” An internationally known composer, Phillips’ musical creations have been performed and honored throughout the United States and in Europe, South America, and China.
Mark Phillips won the 1988 Barlow International Competition for Orchestral Music. Leonard Slatkin has conducted his music with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Japan. In 2004 Phillips premiered Turning Two Hundred, a 50-minute commissioned work for orchestra, jazz band, drum corps, handbell choir, electronic music, eight instrumental soloists, video, and dance. Commissioned for a 2005 premiere in Memphis, his Dreams Interrupted has received subsequent performances in Pittsburgh, Duluth, Baltimore, and Athens (Ohio). Following a national competition, Pi Kappa Lambda commissioned a chamber work from Phillips, which led to the premiere of Bushwhacked! in San Antonio, Texas (September 2006). His music has received hundreds of performances throughout the world —including dozens of orchestra performances — and has been recorded by Richard Stoltzman and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lark Quartet, and several solo artists. Mr. Phillips has also received awards from the Ohio Arts Council, the Indiana Arts Commission, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, Ohio University, Indiana University, the Delius Composition Competition, and the National Flute Society.
Mr. Phillips is a Distinguished Professor of Music at the Ohio University, where he has taught since 1984. From 1982-84 he was a Visiting Instructor of composition at the Indiana University School of Music. Born in Philadelphia, he holds a B.M. degree from West Virginia University and both an M.M. degree and a D.M. degree from Indiana University.
This year, however, the honors come a little closer to home: Ohio University has named Phillips the 2007-08 Distinguished Professor, the university’s highest academic honor, which carries a lifetime designation and recognizes scholarly accomplishment, professional reputation, and contributions to the university. This title commends his influence as an artist — and stands as a lasting tribute to the strong foundation of his musical works.

Kraftwerk (pronounced [?k?aftv??k], German for “power plant” or “power station”) is an influential electronic music band from Düsseldorf, Germany.
The signature Kraftwerk sound combines driving, repetitive electronically-generated rhythms with catchy synthesizer-generated melodies; mainly following a Western classical style of harmony, in a minimalistic arrangement. The group’s simplified lyrics are at times sung through a vocoder or generated by computer-speech software. In the mid to late 1970s and the early 1980s, Kraftwerk’s distinctive sound was revolutionary for its time, and it has had a lasting impact across nearly all genres of modern popular music.
T-Rex is a composition for Solo Trombone and Tape. The backing tracks in this recording are all created from sounds made with trombones. These included playing the trombone in more or less traditional ways, Playing through the mouthpiece alone, tapping and otherwise hitting an old trombone with a variety of objects, etc. These sounds were then electronically altered in a bewildering variety of ways and re-assembled to create a rhythmic backing track for the live trombonist to play along with.
This album is the first of a long line of commercial success for the band. The band’s members settle down, Wolgang Flur, Karl Bartos, Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider constitute the quartet of the classic period to come. The band’s musical creativity is now highly recognized world wide and the style of music be Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and others is generally referred to as “Krautrock”.Krautrock utilizes many techniques of the avante-garde classical music world (minimalism, serial techniques, electronics, etc.), in a successful pop music format, one of the few genres ever to do so.

Badu’s lyrics are highly personal philosophies which throw emotional challenges in the face of the listener.
She weaves unusual musical influences together creating a rich texture of sound. In many instances she references old school rappers and songs in her songs, adding a general Hip hop sensibility to her music.

Ah yes, finally Metronomy’s sophomore album. Definitely more commercial than their last album, “Nights Out” gives you pulsating music you can dance to. The “Nights Intro” is broken down, I love it, but it’s just an intro. “The End Of You Too” is awesome, it’s a homage to their previous work. It’s a sort of cut and paste track, but it works. “Radio Ladio” was the first single to be taken off the album. The keyboards are amazing in the track, the rap at the end is cute, very catchy. “My Heart Rate Rapid” was the second single to be taken from the album. It’s bouncy and off the wall kind of track, really nice. “Heartbreaker” is amazing, the beats are sick. “On The Motorway” and “Side 2″ are like an intermission, you can tell the albums sound will change into something more. “Holiday” is my favorite, it’s probably because it’s heavily disco influenced, but on crack of course. “A Thing For Me” starts off really cute, then the beat kicks in and you know it’s a wrap from there on. “Back On The Motorway” starts off really broken, but morphs to this pulsating track. “On Dancefloors” takes the album down a notch, it’s just one of those tracks you can’t help but feel through your body. The “Nights Outro” ends the album just as it began, strung out and broken, perfectly ending the fast paced and upbeat album. I can’t get enough of “Holiday”. “Nights Out” hits stores September 8th, be sure to get it.

Modeslektor - The White Flash (Trentemller Remix)(Ft. Thom Yorke) [7:03m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadThe last Modeselektor album was a very varied bag of tricks indeed, providing us with a wider scope than on many of their previous efforts. This 3rd 12″ culled from the LP collates two of the better and blatantly epic efforts with liveset favourite ‘Godspeed’ providing the big room hands in the air moments that these guys have made their stock-in-trade, all emotional basslines and sweaty loved up moments galore. Their much talked about collaboration with Thom Yorke recieves a spot to follow, with Thom sounding perfectly floaty over one of the crews finest spine tingling arrangements, while Trentemoller rearranges the cut into a massive dance driving behemoth, piling on the synthlines and working up the bass into a floor slaying frenzy that you’re absolutely guaranteed to be hearing out a heck of a lot this summer if you’re going to the right parties. Ace.
