-Palms Out SoundsToday marks the (un)official launch of Summer 2009 – with our Sounds of Summer mixtape project! Whether you want music for the beach, beats before the club or simply something to listen to whilst you’re yearning to be outside tanning it up; over the next 13 weeks we’ll be keeping your ears well and truly occupied.

We could think of no better way to start the series than with a mix from one of our favorite producers – an all-round nice guy whose been rising faster than recent BBQ sales since we gave you the exclusive on his defining remix of Mystery Jets, this past Autumn. Foamo now finds himself incredibly in demand; with a summer calendar peppered with residency slots in the Chew The Fat room at Space, Ibiza – and we’re super pleased he managed to find time to put together a collection of sure-fire seasonal anthems. Enjoy, and don’t forget to check out Sounds of Summer 02 – Sidechains, coming this Friday!

Starfucker!

Posted by Paul

Sharing their name with a punky Belgian girl group resembling the Donnas and one of the raunchiest Rolling Stones songs on Goats Head Soup (which was changed to the title “Star Star”), Starfucker are an indie pop/indie electro band comprised of Sexton Blake’s Josh Hodges, Junkface’s Ryan Bjornstad, and Mr. Fredrick’s Shawn Glassford. After chief songwriter Hodges returned to Portland, OR, following a four-year stint in New York City, he released two Sexton Blake records on Expunged Records with the help of Bjornstad, including Plays the Hits, a breezy but glum lo-fi album of ’80s covers. Looking to convert his musical endeavors into a more lighthearted project, Hodges recruited Glassford and formed a new group with Bjornstad. With notable live performances that featured some instrument swapping, dual drumming, and stage diving, as well as some outlandish costumes, Dylan Magierek’s attention was drawn to their set and he signed the band to Badman Recording Company. Hodges and Magierek took some of their home recordings to the Type Foundry to round out the record with some intricate layering, and in September 2008 the album was released to the public and hailed by critics for its abundance of dance-friendly hooks.

Reelin in tha Remixes

Posted by Paul

ppit

First one is the most recent one I’ve found, which I got on xlr8r. Here is their description:

Eric Frederic (a.k.a. Wallpaper) sure doesn’t mess around when it comes to funking up the ante. Here he sets “The Reeling,” from Passion Pit, on the operation table and gets to dissecting quick, injecting the song’s first few seconds with a potent Afro-beat blast and some Krautish synthery. We’re eager to see what goodies Frederic will have up his sleeve next.

Next we have Burns remix. burns gives us a housey take on their already synth-heavy single. This was the first remix I heard and I love it.

Last is the Calvin Harris remix. This one is definitely my favorite of the three. It’s again a housy take on another synth-heavy song but it has a funky baseline and it builds really well.

Thanks to Alyese and the rest of the crew for this find. I had heard of em but never jammed that hard to em’. Shits like Flight of the Conchords with a vocoder but less goofy and more awesome. I don’t know these guys too well so I will just be putting up their myspace bio below. A lot more Chromeo to come though. One of my new favorites.

Chromeo is P-Thugg and Dave 1: best friends since their adolescence, virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture. After spending the three years since the release of their debut album, She’s In Control, jet setting, globetrotting, and embarking on an overall sensual conquest of planet Earth, Chromeo headed back to their Montreal lab to put together album number deux.

The result, Fancy Footwork, is quite simply the most smoothed-out, hook-heavy, unabashed lovers’ funk since…Chromeo’s last album, actually. What makes this footwork so fancy, you ask? Step the fuck off and open your heart to the finest distillation of Minneapolis groove this side of Mazarati. Dave and Pee are back in the ‘07 to heal the fractured soul of dance music. Teenage lovers, 20 something blogpoders, 30 something burn-out ex-raver “graphic designers” and 40 something sistas can all finally party under one roof…and that roof has a name, AND that roof is on fire, and the only ones who can put out that funk-fire also happen to be the guys the roof is named after: CHROMEO.

Does analog synth wizard P-Thugg still rock nightgown-sized DipSet t-shirts, talk through a keyboard, and have the thousand-yard stare of a well-practiced gangster? You bet he fucking does. Does vocalist and guitarist Dave 1 still dress like a French Lit professor from 1965? Can he still ask you to twerk without coming off like an imposter? You better believe he can.

Chromeo is slick. Chromeo is dripping with reverb. Chromeo is Moog riffs, luxurious harmonies, macho guitar solos and real-deal songcraft. From the dancefloor-ready singles “Fancy Footwork” and “Tenderoni,” to the autobiographical Jew-boy ballad “Momma’s Boy,” to the epic sax-laden album closer “100%,” Fancy Footwork rolls you through a sleek, melodic world where all you need to worry about is whether you’ve got your sunglasses on and the right moves to keep up. Remember the debate when Chromeo first came on the scene? The endless back and forth about whether those boys were joking or not? Well, Fancy Footwork will put any vestigial haters to sleep forever. There ain’t nothing “ironical” about this music. It’s Hall & Oates riding on 22’s, busting shots in the air with Quincy Jones driving. That shit ain’t funny.

So there you have it: Chromeo, the band reborn…the sex, the beats, the dream, the suits, the gloves, the laughs, the tears, the past and the future. All rolled up into one big blunt, smoked up through Pee’s talkbox tube and exhaled into your brain. Enjoy.

The Hype Machine

Posted by Paul

laura-2 by gtmcknight.

The Hype Machine has been a favorite webpage for me for a while now. I use it to find new music, mostley dance remixes but it has everything. A lot of electronic, dance and indie rock/experimental stuff. I kinda think Justice, MGMT, MSTRKFT, Sigur Ros, Passion Pit type stuff when I think Hypem. and I love that kinda stuff. This site has a lot in it and I have a lot to tell you about it and you can also click here to go to there page and learn more. So get comfortable.

There is soooo much to do on this site… I don’t know where to begin.

DAT NEW NEW

hyp

We will start off at the homepage. When you enter the site, hypem hits you with its latest tracks. These are songs that have been posted on blogs that hypem picks up and then posts on its site. Basically users then get to talk about these different songs, rate the songs, and also talk and rate the blogs that they are found on. I find a lot of new music here and the latest tab is a great way to do so.

WHAT’S COOL?

hypemheart

Hypem also offers a tab in which you can see what tracks have gotten the most Love clicks (heart clicks) in the past 3 days. They leave out anything past three days in order to keep this list of popular tracks fresh and new. The current track on the top today is by an artist I have been posting about a lot recently. It is a remix track of Lisztomania (Yuksek Remix), by Phoenix. I will post it at the bottom of this post along with a few other tracks.

EL RADIO

hypemradio

Hype Machine also offers a radio show that they do weekly. I try to listen to it every week and it is always really good. This is where I learn a lot about new and upcoming artists. Hype also has a tab called Spy where it allows you to se other tracks that are being played currently by other hypem online users, but I won’t go to far into that, you can check it out yourself.. Pretty cool! Here is this weeks radio podcast!

Anyways, I havne’t listened to this yet because I am on a computer at the library with no headphones but I am sure it’s sick and I am excited i got this to go home to. So check it out and let me know what you guys think!

Funk Fo Free

Posted by Paul

Woohoo!!! Hip Hop heads are starting to follow the digital revolution in the music industry and Deltron has released a album online fo free! Following along with Radiohead, NIN, Pretty Lights, and many more deltron has been nice enough to let us listen to his music for free. Screw the man, they don’t get any of Del’s mula! Anyways this whole movement in the music industry about how music is going into a digital revolution has peaked my interest. Everything about how CD sales have been declining and record stores going out of buisness (ex: virgin megastores) and artists starting to release there music online in digital format, either for free or whatever the consumer wants to pay for it. I actually have a speech to do on this very same subject in COMS on Tuesday and will for sure use this as a very recent example. Anyways, here’s the album, I haven’t heard it yet but I am pumped and I know Melli is too. Hope you guys like it. Thanks and keep comin back! Peace & Love.

Del The Funky Homosapien Releases Free Album: Funk Man, The Stimulus Package

delfunky

via Kevin Nottingham’s site:

Less than a year after the release of his last album, Hieroglyphics member and co-founder Del the Funky Homosapien joins the ranks of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails with the free release of his new album, Funk Man: The Stimulus Package via Funnyman Entertainment. Del is currently on a nationwide promotional tour for the album and will be playing in over 30 cities.

As an early adapter of technology and having the status and perspective only a veteran can possess, Del takes advantage of his unique position to adopt a still experimental distribution strategy with Funk Man’s release. Even with longevity, very few artists can hope to successfully launch a free full-length album. However with Del the Funky Homosapien’s solid fan base and sponsorship deals with Arnette, Skull Candy, Osiris Shoes, and Bandcamp.com, Funk Man’s release not only ensures support for the creative process, but also gives fans easy access to music they crave.

With a six year hiatus between Del’s prior two solo releases, fans and critics may be surprised by the release of Funk Man: The Stimulus Package, which is out only a year following Eleventh Hour (Def Jux/Hieroglyphics). Del attributes this timing as a reflection of his life. Having shed the negativity that plagued him in past years, he feels a sense of renewal, which has resulted in newfound creativity. Additionally, after working consistently with record labels in his previous projects, Del is reenergized by his ability to produce music independently.

Being without a record label shouldn’t be cause for alarm because Del, known for his intricate, honest, and humorous word-play, funky beats and artistic versatility, continues to deliver his signature style on Funk Man: The Stimulus Package. The high-energy album is comprised of raw lyrics, driving rhythms, and Del’s undeniable funkiness. Throughout Funk Man, Del challenges the listener to be genuine, especially when he says, “it’s okay to be who you are. You can be free. So what if people are taking about you, they’re going to be talking about you anyway and they probably want to be you. They wish they could by funky, let their hair grow out, be like you.” Del shows his commitment to this message and the funk in each track, from “Get It Right Now’s” sense of urgency, to “And They Thought That Was Hell’s” pop culture warning, and “Straight From the Big Bad West Coast’s” historical breakdown.

Funk Man: The Stimulus Package marks Del the Funky Homosapien’s 14th project as he has been in this hip-hop game for almost two decades. Starting at the tender age of 17 as protégé to his cousin, Ice Cube, Del quickly rose to the top of the underground hip hop scene with his albums, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need for Alarm (1993), both released through Elektra Records. Soon after parting ways with the label, Del joined the Hieroglyphics family, comprised of notable emcees Pep Love, the Souls of Mischief, Casual, and Domino. In 1998 the critically acclaimed album 3rd Eye Vision was the first to be released under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label and since then Del has had consistent success with his solo and joint efforts, including Deltron 3030 (2000), Gorillaz (2001), Full Circle (2003), and Eleventh Hour (2008) to name a few.

As a witness to the destructive technology, i.e. video games, that replaced the comic book industry thirty years ago and seeing the same trends within the music industry today, Del has taken a proactive approach with Funk Man, in his reluctance to rely on standard distribution models. Funk Man: The Stimulus Package is Del’s journey back to basics and the timely message coupled with the LP’s free release display’s his acute awareness of his fan’s needs and the music industry at large.

Here’s another free album that caught my eye the other day. You can’t go wrong with a free album from a member of the Justus League, especially when you got Khrysis on the boards! Here’s more info from the man, Sean Boog, himself:

Whats good people, During 2006 myself(Sean Boog) Khrysis and Nervous Reck (Bomm Sheltuh) recorded a slew of songs and put together an album called The Warm Up ( shout out to the homie J Cole). Originally we were going to release it before we even recorded Training Day … but with out going into detail we ended up doing Training Day. For the last few years we debated what to do with this album. So finally since we think the music is far to good to go to waste and to give the fans some dope shit to listen to, we are giving it to everybody for free download. Pass the word on!!!!

BIIIGG ups to Kevin for all the music. I love your site! Sooo much stuff on it, very well done and put together, great material… keep up the good work Kevin.
